A 3D Printing Lab was opened at UKSW to handle the integrated process of incremental production. The operations of the Lab was inaugurated by Przemysław Czarnek, Minister of Science and Higher Education.
The Minister also handed the Lab a check for nearly 6 million PLN. With this funding, the University will be pursuing its studies on 3D printing. The project that received the funding has the objective of developing new Polish metallic materials for the purposes of incremental production technologies, focusing on rhenium, copper and silver alloys.
– I am very happy about the things that are happening here today. They are extremely important from the scientific perspective. The University has been growing at an extraordinary rate recently. The concept of a 3D printing lab, the opportunities it offers, and the fact that this is a pioneering institution of this type in Poland, makes such initiatives absolutely worthy of support – minister Przemysław Czarnek says.
Research and implementation work can be carried out at the 3D Printing Lab with the involvement of Polish and international science and industry partners. The Lab consists of three units: quantum mechanical modeling of new materials, production and testing of new developments, and 3D printing parameters studies. In addition to its research projects, the Lab will collaborate with institutes and corporations engaged in the development of new materials that are interested in creating their prototypes.

The 3D Printing Lab is the first research unit in Poland and one of the few in Europe which is capable of handling a full range of research and implementation work, starting with preliminary concepts based on numerical models up to the finished product. Studies are conducted with the use of most advanced hardware, including Aconity MINI for powder bed based laser beam melting of metals, commonly known as 3D metal printer. It is the first machine of this type in our part of Europe.
The new Lab will be a part of the Multidisciplinary Research Center of UKSW, which is being developed in Dziekanów Leśny near Warsaw. The Center will ensure UKSW advancement in the field of digital studies. It will contribute to the development of innovative technology solutions that will be implemented in the economy and provide the basis for implementation of digital transformation tasks.

In addition to the 3D Printing Lab, the University’s third campus in Dziekanów Leśny houses the CATO supercomputer, 3D interactive materials development tools, advanced software, creative space, or advanced household electronics.
