In winter semester of academic year 2024/2025 on the Faculty of Biology and Environmental Sciences at UKSW as part of the Erasmus+ KA171 program, Ms. Patricia Alejandra Becerra Lucio and Ms. Norka Maria Fortuny Fernandez, PhD students from El Colegio de La Frontera Sur in Mexico, undertook studies at our university.
The PhD students participated in both classes dedicated to Erasmus program students and the Doctoral School at UKSW. They also conducted a doctoral seminar under the supervision of Professor Jerzy Romanowski, Dean of the Faculty of Biology and Environmental Sciences.

Additionaly at the edn of the semester, PhD students gave two lectures in which they summarised their PhD thesis. Students shared thei knowledge and experience:
The first leacutre was about the spatial structure of traditional home gardens in the Yucatán Peninsula. The discussion covered biodiversity management by local communities in different rainfall zones and the impact of environmental conditions on the organization and functioning of gardens.
The second lecture focused on the role of microorganisms in spontaneous fermentation, using the example of mezcal production. Students had the opportunity to learn how wild yeasts and bacteria shape the fermentation process, giving mezcal its unique taste and aroma.
How do the PhD students rate their visit at UKSW?
“Studies within the Erasmus+ KA171 program at UKSW expanded my knowledge in the field of biological sciences and taught me confidence. I also had the opportunity to improve my English skills and learn basic phrases in Polish.” – Ms. Norka Maria Fortuny Fernandez
“UKSW is a wonderful university! Thanks to the interesting lectures conducted by qualified academic staff, I was able to develop my scientific interests. I also value the warm atmosphere and the openness of both the lecturers and students.” – Ms. Patricia Alejandra Becerra Lucio

Visit of PhD Students from El Colegio de La Frontera Sur in Mexio was not onle the opportunity to gain knowledge but also to exchange the experience and to build international academic relations. We are happy that UKSW could be a part of their academic journey!
