20210812 094516 1 kopiaThe Minister of Science and Higher Education assigned scientific categories to 21 disciplines in which UKSW is doing its research. Since the previous evaluation, the level of the University’s research activities advanced strongly.

– I am extremely happy as Rector of UKSW but also as Chancellor who has been responsible for the research work during the recent years. We all submitted to the painstaking process of evaluation. We all took responsibility for our University and I am really grateful for that. Our results are extraordinary and we can be proud of ourselves. I would like to thank all the staff, PhD students and everyone who presented their research achievements for evaluation. We cannot disregard the support we received from the administrative personnel who were dealing with all the systems and supported us along the whole process. We are facing a great challenge today, not only to maintain this high level of advancement but to pursue an even higher degree of excellence – says rev. prof. Ryszard Czekalski, PhD hab., Rector of UKSW.

UKSW received one A+ rating in the discipline of Canon Law; five disciplines received category A, namely: Theological Sciences, History, Literature Studies, Art Studies, and Psychology. A total of 12 disciplines were rated B+: Archaeology, Philosophy, Linguistics, Cultural and Religious Studies, Information Sciences in Engineering and Telecommunication, Political and Administration Studies, Sociology, Pedagogy, Mathematics, Chemical Sciences, Physical Sciences, and Legal Studies.

academic degree of Doctor and 18 authorizations to confer the academic degree of Doctor hab. in disciplines that were rated at least B+ in the evaluation of science and research activities, yielding a total of 36 authorizations to confer academic degrees. The new doctoral authorizations cover the following disciplines: Linguistics, Cultural and Religious Studies, Engineering Information Sciences and Telecommunication, and Art Studies. Evaluation of the quality of science and research activities is a new procedure for assessment of the scientific level of research activities at Polish research institutions, applicable since the entry into force of the Act – Law on Higher Education and Science in 2018. In the evaluation process, individual accomplishments of all staff members engaged in research activities and doctoral students representing a specific discipline are taken into account. The following three criteria are considered in the evaluation process: the level of scientific advancement of the activities, the financial deliverables of research or development work, and the impact of the research activities on the functioning of the society and the economy.

– The scientific categories that were assigned to us are an important message for our community. First, we publish our research findings in high scored publications: monographs and articles; second, we receive grants funded from external sources, and our work has an influence on the society and the economy. Hence, we pursue the mission of a true university, which is responsible, seeks the truth about God and human, and is open to everyone. We are the real universitas. Here we should quote our Blessed Patron, speaking to the Senate of the Academy of Catholic Theology, our predecessor: “Your work is not in vain. The more reliable it is, the higher the professors’ level of excellence, the higher requirements you set for young people, the more certain we can be about the continued existence and growth of this institution”, Rector of UKSW summarizes.

The results of scientific and research quality evaluation cover the period of five years, from 2017 to 2021. The ratings are relevant to the authorization to open study cycles, to teach students at doctoral schools, to confer the academic degrees of doctor and doctor hab., and they determine the amounts of funding received by the University from the State budget.
