International cooperation and exchange

The Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw (UKSW) prioritises research development and cooperation with the most prominent scientific institutions both in Europe and internationally.

One of the many ways that UKSW strengthens its relationships with the worldwide academic community is by offering both students and staff of UKSW the opportunity of undertaking study or research at a foreign university. UKSW also welcomes visiting students and researchers from all over the world.

During the lifetime of Erasmus programme at UKSW (starting from 1990) a large number of students and staff had their opportunity to benefit from the EU funded exchange scheme. Annually, approximately 200 representatives of UKSW academic community gain their knowledge and experience in universities and institutions abroad.

Several academic teachers hold their lectures at foreign Erasmus+ partner institutions. They teach students at universities of numerous EU countries, eg. Italy, Czech Republic, Romania, Portugal, Slovakia, Germany, Hungary, Lithuania, France, Turkey, Latvia or Slovenia, while simultaneously broadening and enriching the inter-institutional cooperation. Furthermore, each year UKSW hosts professors of the leading European universities who provide lectures for the students of our university.

At USKW, international cooperation and exchange also includes university administration staff. In order to undertake relevant training and to enhance professional competence 16 members of the administration staff went to foreign academic institutions as part of the Erasmus programme, attending universities and schools in Latvia, Portugal, Belgium, Italy, Great Britain, France and Czech Republic.

In order to support the continued development of international academic exchange, UKSW engages with a wide range of foreign institutions, offices and governmental bodies. In 2013 five new cooperation agreements were signed with universities in Belarus, Croatia, Russia, Slovenia and the Czech Republic. As part of the Erasmus programme, UKSW has reciprocal agreements with 160 institutions and 48 new agreements have been signed with other European institutions.

UKSW also supports the following programmes, funds and scholarships which promote international cooperation and exchange:

• International Visegrad Fund
• CEEPUS (studies abroad as part of the network of the Institute of Political Science – Ethics and Politics in the European Context)
• Polish-American Fulbright Commission
• Free Mover
• DAAD
• BUWiWM programmes

UKSW, aiming at increasing the effectiveness of international cooperation, has become a member of the following European associations promoting university-level education and exchange between the member universities:

• FIUCE – Fédération des Universités Catholiques Européennes – network of Catholic European universities created as part of the Fédération Internationale des Universités Catholiques (FIUC).
• FIUC – international association of Catholic universities and Catholic higher education institutions, approved by the Holy See in 1949 and acknowledged as an International Non-Government Organization by the United Nations System.

International cooperation and exchange will continue to be a priority at UKSW. To ensure this the development of this aspect of the university, in 2013 the following legal acts were prepared:

• decision on the mode of concluding agreements for cooperation between the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw and foreign entities (Decision no. 61/13 of the Rector of UKSW of 18 September 2013);
• resolution of the Senate on giving the consent to the participation of the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw in the ERASMUS+ programme in the years 2014-2020 (Resolution no. 174/2013 of the Senate of UKSW dated 19 December 2013).

At the same time the motion for the Erasmus Charter for Higher Education for the years 2014-2020 was prepared and submitted to the Commission of the European Union. The works were accomplished with success and UKSW obtained the Erasmus Charter for Higher Education, thus acquiring the authorization to conduct all activities foreseen by the new Erasmus+ programme in the years 2014-2020.
